Thornhurst Community Options, Inc is a privately-owned agency providing support to adults living with mental disabilities. We are solely funded by the Province of Manitoba, Family Services and Housing, Adult Services, Community Living. Mission statement for Thornhurst Community Options, Inc: Thornhurst Community Options, Inc is committed to providing options for residential living, supporting opportunities for independence and improving the quality of life for persons living with a mental disability. History In August of 1998, Laraine Hunt, BEd. PBC (special education), entered into negotiations with the Province of Manitoba, (Family Services and Housing, Adult Services, Community Living), to establish a residence for four adults living with a mental disability. By May 15, 1999, Thornhurst Community Options was formed and was operating a residence at 122 - 9thStreet South, in Morden, Manitoba. Thornhurst Community Option, Inc. has been incorporated since August 27, 2002. Wayne and Laraine Hunt are the primary shareholders of the Corporation , however, planning and decisions are made in consultation with their Board of Directors which consists of themselves as well as a nurse and psychologist. Programs Offered Thornhurst Community Options has two programs that it currently offers: 1.A residential program with 2. A Supported Independent Living program that supports disabled adults living independently in the community. The number in this program varies with the identified needs as contracted by the Community Services Workers, Adult Services, Community Living of Family Services and Housing. Individualized Support TCO is a firm supporter of individual personal planning for the people it serves. It provides Individual Personal Planning using PATH, MAPS and a variety of other personal planning tools. TCO encourages a variety of day and work experiences for its residents. To foster these personal needs and choices, people attend a variety of work/day programs within the region. Our organization is dedicated to providing options that best meet the needs of the individual. Living in a Residence Like any housemates, the residents are encouraged to take part in the daily routines of their home to the best of their ability. Lifeskills are taught and reinforced at every opportunity. Participation in Special Olympics and other activities are encouraged and supported. Supported Independent Living Some folks with intellectual disabilities are living in indepent settings such as apartments or suites. TCO, when contracted by Family Services and Housing, provides support workers to ensure success. Future Plans Thornhurst Community Options, Inc. is a vibrant and forward thinking residential service.
